Matevž Kos: Vprašanje o Podbevškovem »pesniškem molku«. Jezik in slovstvo. 5/2009. 3–13.

Matevž Kos: The Question of Podbevšek’s “Poetic Silence”. Jezik in slovstvo. 5/2009. 3–13.
The discussion is focused on the question of the early poetic silence of Anton Podbevšek, the first representative of the Slovene literary avant-garde, referred to by some interpreters as the “Slovene Rimbaud”, as he withdrew from writing poetry at the very early age of only twenty-two. Podbevšek’s only collection of poetry Man with Bombs was not published until 1925, i.e., five years after the poet had opted for silence. In the first half of the 1920s, he participated in the emergence of two literary journals, Three Swans and Red Pilot. The present article analyses and compares these journals, and on this basis attempts to explain the relationship between literary and political avant-gardism in Podbevšek, his departure from poetry and his later attempts to return to poetry.

Peter Svetina: Mladinska književnost med krščanstvom in socializmom: dve zgodbi ene Bratovščine Sinjega galeba. Jezik in slovstvo. 5/2009. 15–30.

Peter Svetina: Youth Literature between Christianity and Socialism: Two Stories of One The Brotherhood of the Blue Seagull. Jezik in slovstvo. 5/2009. 15–30.
The Brotherhood of the Blue Seagull by Tone Seliškar is one of the central works of contemporary youth narrative prose. The work was first published in book form in 1936, when the Slovene middle class had a central social role, while the revised edition was published in 1948, in the time of the newly emerged socialist regime. The new social circumstances also had an influence on the different conceptual point of departure in the novel. A comparison of and commentary on the changes of the pre-war and post-war editions of the story is the topic of the present article.

Andrej Zavrl: Dečki med erotiko in moralo: telo, spol in spolnost v prvem slovenskem homoerotičnem romanu. Jezik in slovstvo. 5/2009. 31–40.

Andrej Zavrl: Boys between the Erotic in the Moral: The Body, Gender and Sexuality in the First Slovene Homoerotic Novel. Jezik in slovstvo. 5/2009. 31–40.
Novšak’s Boys (1938), the first Slovene homoerotic novel, is firmly rooted in the traditional conception of the body gender and sexuality. Nonetheless, in a detailed analysis of the text we can sense the nascent state of the superseding of this conception. Boys is neither a clear dividing line nor an unproblematic transition between the homoerotic and the heteroerotic. The transition is not linear - if the erotic behaviour of the boys in the boarding school had had a single-sex orientation it would, in the sense of a transitional homoerotic phase, have led to the heteroerotic in an unproblematic way - but rather it is a case of both orientations being present at the same time: heteronorms constantly intervene in the homoerotic, while the heteroerotic is marked by the homosocial and the homoerotic.

Davorin Dukič: Poimenovanja argumentacije v referenčnem korpusu FidaPLUS. Jezik in slovstvo. 5/2009. 41–56.

Davorin Dukič: Designations of Argumentation in the FidaPLUS Reference Corpus. Jezik in slovstvo. 5/2009. 41–56.
With an analysis of authentic text extracts in the FidaPLUS Slovene language reference corpus, the article determines whether Slovene speakers are aware of the difference in meaning between argumentation, (logical) demonstration and (rhetorical) persuasion, as explained in a short overview of the theoretical concepts. The use of designations for the three language activities mentioned is surveyed, with the goal of ascertaining whether it is a case of synonymous or non-synonymous use. The research shows that the level of awareness of the differences between these three related language activities is, judging by the use of their designations, at a low level.

Mojca Stritar, Marko Stabej: Večjezičnost v institucijah Evropske unije – ali res deluje?: slovenščina v Svetu EU. Jezik in slovstvo. 5/2009. 57–72.
Ti so v glavnem zadovoljni s storitvami tolmačenja in prevajanja kljub težavam, kot so strokovna terminologija, tehnične težave in nepravočasnost prevodov v slovenščino.

Mojca Stritar, Marko Stabej: Multilingualism in the Institutions of the European Union – Does it Really Work?: Slovene Language in the European Council. Jezik in slovstvo. 5/2009. 57–72.
With the aid of a written questionnaire, an analysis of the language position of Slovene representatives in working groups and committees of the European Council was undertaken. On the whole, these representatives are satisfied with the interpreting and translation services available, in spite of difficulties such as specialist terminology, technical problems and delays with translations into Slovene. Although interpreting is provided relatively frequently, Slovene representatives use the Slovene language rather rarely, especially in informal situations. The English language prevails, which is also the language of which the Slovene representatives have the best knowledge, while the language that presents them with the most difficulties in communication is French. The use of Slovene language seems most important to the representatives primarily from the symbolic point of view, while in practice they use just one working language. Nonetheless, half of the representatives questioned are in favour of the existing multi-linguistic system within the institutions of the EU, while some of them believe that having English as the only working language would be a functional and financially efficient system.
