Andrej Leben: Slovenska literatura na avstrijskem Koroškem: manjšinska – regionalna? Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2013. 5–15.

Andrej Leben: Slovenian Literature in Austrian Carinthia: Minority-Regional Literature? Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2013. 5–15.
The contribution sheds light on conceptual changes in the treatment and designation of Slovenian literature in Austrian Carinthia, both within the discourse of literary science and on the part of literary authors, on the backdrop of the sociopolitical contexts and literary development of the past decades. Recent literary practices, in particular, demonstrate that ethnic, linguistic and geographical criteria are inadequate for a comprehensive definition of the subject, especially in light of the fact that the literature of Slovenian authors in Carinthia ranges from Slovenian writings via hybrid language forms to writings in German and other languages. At the same time, literary images of the reality and space concerning the past and present of Carinthian Slovenes are also being created by authors who do not belong to a minority.

Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2013. 17–26.

Silvija Borovnik: Lipuš’s The Flight of Boštjan and Inquiry After a Name as Drawing the Full Circle with a Stronger Line. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2013. 17–26.
It is interesting to observe similarities between the latest prose text of Florjan Lipuš entitled Inquiry After a Name from 2013 and The Flight of Boštjan published ten years earlier, in 2003, as well as how the two works complement each other and how the latest one originates from all of the earlier ones, while at the same time transcending everything that was written before.
Keywords: Lipuš’s prose texts, Slovenian literature in Austria, Slovenian language as identity

Denis Poniž: Izkoreninil se bom/Mich ausgraben – poezija Janija Oswalda v presečišču dveh svetov. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2013. 27–35.

Denis Poniž: Eradicating Myself/Mich ausgraben – the Poetry of Jani Oswald at the Crossroads of Two Worlds. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2013. 27–35.
In the article, on the basis of two collections of poetry by Jani Oswald, Babylon and Achillenverse, we seek to address the question of the young generation of Slovenian poets and their relationship to the bilingual reality that defines their creativity. In determining the features of his own poetics within the space of the sociopolitical reality, Oswald, with his poetics, steps outside the model of Slovenian national-defensive literature, replacing this model with a word play that deploys the strategies of concrete poetry, while also attempting to comprehend the bilingual or even trilingual reality of the region between the Alps and the Adriatic, particularly the “Carinthian” reality residing somewhere between regionalism and multiculturalism.

Marija Pirjevec: Vprašanje regionalizma in univerzalizma v Rebulovi prozi. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2013. 37–47.

Marija Pirjevec: The Question of Regionalism and Universalism in the Prose of Alojz Rebula. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2013. 37–47.
A constant topic in the narrative prose of Alojz Rebula is the encounter of the regional and the universal, which is both a fundamental problem of our time and a key question of contemporary Slovenian culture. The problem has drawn the attention of both national and international critics alike, amongst whom one could mention Claudio Magris, who, in his book Trieste, un'identitá di frontiera (Trieste, the Border Identity), writes that Rebula “with his historical-symbolic-religious novel Nel vento della sibilla (In Sybil’s Wind) (1968) conveys a parable of the conflict between the universal and the particular, between unity and heterogeneity, which is a severe conflict of our time.” In his opus, Rebula raises the question of the close interconnectedness between the regional and the universal, both of which can be protracted to their extremes. This is a case of contamination of two fundamental opposites. It was in fact regional determinism, which is found in Rebula’s early works in all of its intensity, that shifted the impetus in the opposite direction, towards universalism. It is, however, by no means a type of loose universalism, but rather one still firmly attached to tradition and profoundly determined by it.
Keywords: regionalism, universalism, Alojz Rebula, short prose

Bogomila Kravos: Josip Tavčar na stečišču kultur. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2013. 49–57.
V petdesetih letih prejšnjega stoletja so obiskovalci Slovenskega gledališča v Trstu navdušeno sprejeli dramski prvenec Josipa Tavčarja, ker je sporočilnost tega dela ponazarjala takratno čutenje Tržačanov. O tem priča štirideset dram, nekaj esejev, številne kritike, ciklusi predavanj in prevodi.
Ključne besede: Josip Tavčar, Trst, medkulturnost, stečišče kultur, manjšinskost, nacionalna identiteta

Bogomila Kravos: Josip Tavčar at the Convergence of Cultures. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2013. 49–57.
In the 1950s, Josip Tavčar won wide acclaim from theatre goers attending the Slovenian National Theatre in Trieste for his first drama, which was a reflection of the sentiment of the citizens of Trieste at the time. Tavčar gained recognition over night, and in his subsequent plays extended the topics of external appearance and consumerism to the degradation of ethical rules and lust for power. Thematically, he was inspired by world events and spoke of the Slovenian bourgeoisie, who lived in accordance with the historical legacy of their environment. Within the context of theatre, part of literary criticism viewed Tavčar’s ability to establish his own subjectivity and his endeavours for the promotion of his own discourse as an extraordinary achievement. When, in Trieste in the 1970s, the presupposition of the suffering foreigner whose life goal is to preserve Slovenian identity became predominant, the original Trieste discourse lost significance. Tavčar persisted and continued to analyse the contemporary reality of Trieste outside the established models. Forty plays, a number of essays and many critical reviews, lecture cycles and translations bear witness to this.
Keywords: Josip Tavčar, Trieste, interculturalism, convergence of cultures, minority status, national identity

David Bandelj: Nekaj opazk o najsodobnejši beneški poeziji. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2013. 59–71.

David Bandelj: Some Remarks about the Most Recent Venetian Poetry. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2013. 59–71.
A generation of poets operating in the regions of Benečija (Veneto), Rezija (Resia) and the Valleys of Kanal (Canale) and Ter (Torre) has produced a unique phenomenon in the Slovenian literature of the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. By examining the trends that distinguish these authors, I will attempt to exemplify their poetological decision to continue the tradition of vernacular poetry, which they upgrade with content selection that is fresh and modern, sometimes daring, in order to bring the level of vernacular poetry, traditionally perceived as folk poetry, to that of literary art.
Keywords: Slovenes in Italy, contemporary poetry, Veneto, Resia, literary generations
