Dragica Haramija: Dejavniki bralne pismenosti in družinskega branja v otrokovem predšolskem obdobju. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 3–15.
Zajemali smo rezultate ciljnega raziskovalnega projekta Kulturni in sistemski dejavniki bralne pismenosti na Slovenskem in razvojno-raziskovalnega projekta družinske pismenosti V objemu besed. Dejavniki razvoja družinske pismenosti so sistemski in kulturni.
Ključne besede: predšolsko izobraževanje, bralna pismenost, družinska pismenost, kulturni in sistemski dejavniki bralne pismenosti
Dragica Haramija: Reading Literacy and Family Reading in the Preschool Period. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 3–15.
Based on the results of two separate surveys regarding reading literacy in the preschool period, we conducted an analysis of various research surveys on reading literacy and family reading and produced an improved platform for the development of reading literacy and family reading in the preschool period. We included the results of a research project entitled Cultural and Systematic Factors of Reading Literacy in Slovenia, and of a research and development project on family literacy entitled Hugged by Words. The results were analysed in the light of key competences for the twenty-first century (based on eight key competences for lifelong learning), the guidelines on emergent literacy as set out within the White Paper on Education (2011), and the proposal of a National Literacy Strategy (2017). The factors in family literacy development are system-related and cultural. One of the key system-related factors is preschool education, which has a tremendous impact on family literacy, as the current Curriculum for Preschool (1999) establishes the foundation for the understanding of different activities in the kindergarten, focusing above all on recognising the fact that literacy extends to all areas of activity (movement, language, art, society, nature, mathematics).

Darija Skubic in Uršula Podobnik: Prepričanja vzgojiteljev o rabi slikanice brez besedila v vrtcu. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 17–31.

Darija Skubic in Uršula Podobnik: Preschool Teachers’ Beliefs about the Use of Wordless Picture Books in Kindergarten. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 17–31.
Numerous research studies emphasise the importance of picture books for preschool children when developing literacy skills. The role of illustrations as an aid to help children visualise the literary content, understand the text and increase their vocabulary and verbalisation also receives attention in various studies. The main aim of the present study was to investigate preschool teachers’ beliefs about wordless picture books and their use in kindergarten. For this purpose, an 18-item questionnaire was created and sent to randomly selected Slovenian kindergartens. A total of 175 respondents participated in the study. The results show that the attitude of preschool teachers towards wordless picture books and their use is positive and encouraging. The respondents did not differ significantly in their beliefs according to sex, age, education, working position and work experience, although some significant differences did emerge with regard to kindergarten locations.

Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 33–45.

Mojca Leskovec: The Role of Slovenian as a First Language in Teaching German as a Second/Third Language
. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 33–45.
In the history of foreign language didactics, the role of the first language in teaching further languages has been overlooked for a long time. In modern foreign language classrooms, however, it has found its place again, as such classrooms follow didactic-methodological principles, including plurilingualism. The main goal of foreign language teaching is the development of communicative competence, which, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, is formed through the interrelation and interaction of all of the languages one has learned. Slovenian syllabi for German foresee the integration of the first language. The aim of a survey conducted among Slovenian teachers of German was to determine how often they integrate Slovenian as a first language of the majority into German-as-a-second/third-language classrooms and for what purpose. Most of the teachers defined the frequency as low. Two-thirds of the participants include Slovenian for comparative analysis, while more than half of them use Slovenian when explaining grammar. The most common reason for not including Slovenian in German-as-a-second/third-language classrooms more often was the belief that foreign language classes should be taught in the target language.

Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 47–62.
Prispevek predstavlja rezultate slušnega zaznavanja in prepoznavanja sredinskih samoglasnikov.

Jana Volk: The Perception of Slovenian Medial Vowels among Students in the Slovenian Littoral. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 47–62.
The article presents the results of tests of hearing detection and recognition of medial vowels. Students of various study programmes at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Primorska participated in the perception test. The results acquired were compared to two studies carried out among students of Slovenian and Slavic studies in Ljubljana (Tivadar 2004) and among high school students in the Pomurje region (Huber 2006). The data obtained with the perception test were analysed according to the criteria of study programme, dialect group and gender. It was determined that students in the Slovenian Littoral have weaker abilities to recognise medial vowel quality compared to students in Ljubljana and Pomurje. The best results were observed among students of Slovenian studies and among female participants.

Svetlana Kmecová in Saša Vojtech Poklač: Ona s koso. Nekateri vidiki dojemanja smrti in njihova prisotnost v slovenski in slovaški frazeologiji. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 63–75.

Svetlana Kmecová in Saša Vojtech Poklač: Ona s koso. Some Aspects of the Perception of Death and their Reflection in Slovenian and Slovak Phraseologies. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 63–75.
People have always been interested in the relation between life and death and their continuity. Various religions and sciences have different opinions on the subject. As the issue of death is as old as humankind itself, contemporary languages feature various ideas about death as a supernatural being, with ancient concepts overlapping with more recent ones. Both Slovenian and Slovak contain well-preserved traces of an anthropomorphic perception of death, i.e., death as a female creature, but zoomorphic and other images of death are known, as well. The present paper seeks to answer the question of how the aforementioned ideas are reflected in both of the languages in question, especially in their phraseologies.

Primož Vitez: Etična sinteza v Cankarjevih političnih spisih. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 77–86.

Primož Vitez: Ethical Synthesis in Ivan Cankar’s Political Texts. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 77–86.
The literary writings of Ivan Cankar are of such thematic and generic complexity that they do not permit a simplistic analysis with regard to traditional theoretical and historical taxonomies. Although the majority of his texts are written in prose, his literary style maintains a fundamental relationship with the poetic basis of his writing. This is true not only of the texts that are normally read as “pure literature”, but also of those engaged in polemics with the predominant Slovenian cultural politics of his time. The same complexity is observed in his literary approaches to political and ontological themes, which cannot be effectively analysed by partial ideological interpretations. Cankar’s socialism is just as imbued with rebellion as his Christian idealism. Both ethical principles are synthesised and essentially applied within the original aesthetic gestures by which Cankar tried to “purify and rejuvenate” Slovenian political thinking.

Špela Virant: Etično versus politično korektno: kontroverze v sodobni literarni vedi. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 87–99.
To so predvsem različna pojmovanja literature in etike, pojma empatije in samorefleksije, problem generalizacije oz. univerzalizacije etičnih vrednot ter vidik časa.

Špela Virant: Ethics versus Political Correctness: Controversies in Contemporary Literary Criticism
. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 87–99.
Since the time of Ancient Greece, ethical questions have been of major importance for literature and literary theory. Although marginalised in Modernism, they reappeared after the “ethical turn” at the end of the twentieth century. The present article focuses on some major topics addressed in current debates: different conceptions of literature and ethics, empathy and self-reflection, generalisation and universality of ethical values, and the aspect of time. The issues discussed will be exemplified by the reception of Gomringer’s poem avenidas.

Alojzija Zupan Sosič: Pripovedi spolnih manjšin v Sloveniji po letu 2000. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 101–113.
Alojzija Zupan Sosič: Narratives of Sexual/Gender Minorities in Slovenia since 2000. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2018. 101–113.
Twenty-nine narrative books written by sexual/gender minorities have been published in Slovenia since 2000. The present study analyses just one text by each of the following authors: Brane Mozetič, Nataša Sukič, Suzana Tratnik, Gojmir Polajnar (Boris Pintar), Urška Sterle, Jedrt Lapuh Maležič, Vesna Lemaić, Teja Oblak and Nina Dragičević. An interpretative analytical approach combined with the starting points of gay and lesbian studies and queer theory found the following novelties in the LGBTQ narrative of the new millennium: the dominance of lesbian topics, the emergence of transsexual characters, the erosion of victimisation, and subversion as modernisation of the narrative level.
Keywords: sexual/gender minorities, lesbian topics, transsexual characters
