Peter Scherber: Iz zgodovine slovenske poetike. Rokopisni osnutek prozodije Blaža Kumerdeja. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 17–25.

Peter Scherber: From the History of Slovenian Poetics: A Manuscript Draft of Blaž Kumerdej’s Poetics. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 17–25.
The Slovenian educator and Enlightenment figure Blaž Kumerdej wrote a handwritten fragment in 1791 as the second part of his attempt at a Carniolan-Slavonic grammar. Written in German, this document consists of a preface that is a genuine “defence” of the Slavic/Slovenian language, while the main part is a fragment of a treatise on “Carniolan-Slovenian” prosody, as well as on rhymes and figures. This draft is as yet untranslated and unpublished. The present article provides a survey of the research done so far as well as a brief overview of the document. The focus is on the intentions of the Enlightenment scholar Kumerdej as discussed in the preface, in which he presents his arguments with the aid of the well-known example of the “noble savage”. The document can be interpreted as an example of the Enlightenment tradition of the “defence of language”.

Jožica Čeh Steger: Literarno-likovna medmedialnost v Cankarjevi zgodnji kratki prozi. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 27–37.
V vinjeti kranjskega kritikastrskega favna sta prepoznavni hibridna slikovna metafora in jezikovo-slikovna metafora. Literarno-likovne relacije so opazovane v posameznih referencah na slikarstvo, v literarnih opisih slik, ob literarnih osebah in na ravni metaforičnega prenašanja prvin likovnega stila (kontrasta, ornamenta, kontur, linije idr.) v literarno besedilo.

Jožica Čeh Steger: Literary-Artistic Intermediality in Cankar’s Early Short Prose. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 27–37.
The present contribution focuses on Cankar’s interest in the fine arts and in elements of literary-artistic intermediality in his early short prose. At the turn of the twentieth century, Cankar fervently acquired knowledge of works of fine art in Vienna, collaborated with Slovenian painters in the furnishing of books with artworks, and even used some artists as a source for his literary works. In the case of Jager’s secessionist furnishing of Cankar’s Vignettes 8 (1899), the ornamental covers and the vignettes of the opinionated Carniolan faun, a form of intermedial literary-artistic combination is presented in which literary and artistic expression complement each other in terms of both content and style. In the vignettes of the opinionated Carniolan faun, one recognises the hybrid pictorial metaphor and the linguistic-pictorial metaphor. Literary-artistic relations are contemplated in individual references to the fine arts, in the literary descriptions of paintings, in the literary protagonists, and at the level of the metaphorical transfer of stylistic elements of painting (contrast, ornamentation, contours, lines, two-dimensionality, etc.) to literary texts.

Miran Hladnik: Skrivnost kabineta 209 b. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 39–53.

Miran Hladnik: The Mystery of Room 209b. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 39–53.
The article presents a database of 12,000 poems of Slovenian national liberation poetry from 1941 to 1945, created under the direction of Boris Paternu at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana in the 1970s, especially its overlooked and unused digital version, as evidenced by a computer printout of the catalogue from 1980 and 1981. This was one of the first contacts of Slovenian literature with computers. The webification of the collection has begun with the redigitisation of the catalogue. This will protect the sensitive unique material from destruction and greatly increase its usefulness, e.g., for stylometric analyses and for the identification of unauthorised verses on more than a thousand Slovenian partisan monuments.

Marko Juvan, Mojca Šorli, Andrejka Žejn: Interpretiranje literature v zmanjšanem merilu: »Oddaljeno branje« korpusa »dolgega leta 1968«. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 55–75.
»oddaljeno branje« raziskuje uveljavljanje modernizma, spreminjanje zvrstnega repertoarja in literarnega jezika, besedilne sledi revolucionarnega ozračja in vlogo žensk v literarnem sistemu.

This article discusses the role of interpretation in the digital humanist approach to literature, focusing on corpus analysis. It illustrates the interpretive significance of computer-based quantitative statistical analyses of tokens, tags and metadata in a small corpus of literary texts produced in a given period. Using the example of a corpus of original literary texts printed in the journals of the predominantly student generation (Tribuna and Problemi) during the international student movement of “The Long 1968”, a quantitative analysis or “distant reading” examines the assertion of modernism, the change in genre repertoire and literary language, the textual traces of the revolutionary atmosphere, and the role of women in the literary system.

Vilma Purič: Sprehod Irene Novak Popov po narečni beneški poeziji. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 77–87.
Z analizami individualnih poetik nekaterih avtorjev (Marine Cernetig, Viljema Černa, Alda Klodiča, Gabrielle Tomasetig, Andreine Trusgnach in drugih) nakaže nekatere tipološke sestavine beneškega pisanja. Pričujoči zapis raziskuje v besedilih beneških avtorjev poseben odnos do lokalne govorice in raznoliko izpisovanje prostorske stvarnosti.

Vilma Purič: Irena Novak-Popov’s Walk through the Dialectal Poetry of Beneška Slovenija/Slavia Friulana. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 77–87.
The article focuses on studies of contemporary poetry from Beneška Slovenija/Slavia Friulana (Venetian Slovenia) by the literary historian Irena Novak Popov. Considering Venetian-Slovenian works as a subsystem within Slovenian literature, Irena Novak Popov recognises its distinct literary form and acknowledges its unique development, which is tied to a specific historical and social framework. She explores this subsystem as a distinct artistic and cultural phenomenon in relation to the mainstream system of Slovenian literature and strives to make the literature of the western edge of the ethnic Slovenian territory more visible in public literary discourse, establishing it as the subject of expert analysis. Through analyses of the individual poetics of a number of authors (Marina Cernetig, Viljem Černo, Aldo Klodič, Gabriella Tomasetig, Andreina Trusgnach and others), she suggests some peculiar components of Venetian-Slovenian writing. The present article highlights the special attitude of Venetian-Slovenian authors towards the local language and their heterogenous presentation of spatial reality.

Zvonko Kovač: Još jednom (posljednji put) o ljubavi. „Obnove modernizma“ i postmoderna u slovenskoj i hrvatskoj poeziji. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 89–96.
Ključne besede: prenovitve modernizma (neomodernizem), postmoderna, slovenski in hrvaški pesniki
Zvonko Kovač: Once Again (Last Time) about Love. “Renewals of Modernism” and Postmodernism in Slovenian and Croatian Poetry. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 89–96.
The relationship and boundaries between the repeated renovations of modernism and the postmodern in the second half of the twentieth century are not easy to determine because they depend on innovation based on originality and historical modernisms, and writing with or through (and in resistance to) tradition. My reading and understanding (analyses, interpretation) refers to comparative analyses of the poetry of Dane Zajc, Drago Ivanišević and Danijel Dragojević. Instead of a conclusion, there is a brief contrasting insight into the poetry of Tomaž Šalamun and Luko Paljetak, a poet of parallel neomodernism and postmodernism.

Mateja Pezdirc Bartol: Podoba ladje in morja v treh slovenskih dramah. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 97–105.
V članku analiziramo tri slovenske drame: Ognjeni zmaj Mirana Jarca, Ladja brez imena Vitomila Zupana in Konec Atlasa Žanine Mirčevske.

Mateja Pezdirc Bartol: Ship and Ocean Imagery in Three Slovenian Plays. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 97–105.
In this paper, we analyse three Slovenian plays: Ognjeni zmaj (Fire Dragon) by Miran Jarc, Ladja brez imena (Ship Without a Name) by Vitomil Zupan and Konec Atlasa (The End of Atlas) by Žanina Mirčevska. Although these texts are from three different periods, they share a common setting, namely, a ship on a stormy sea. We find that a ship in the middle of the ocean is a metaphor for human unease and inner struggles, and develops into a symbol of man’s navigation between good and evil. Accordingly, the ocean symbolises man’s thrownness into the world and raises fundamental ontological questions about existence, meaning and individual moral responsibility. Another connection between the texts is the style of writing, as all three are characterised by rich symbolism, use of metaphor, and poetic language. The dramatic texts stress the allegorical nature of the plot, the poetic nature of the language, and the yearning to discover some overall truth about the world, often also connecting with biblical tradition.

Alojzija Zupan Sosič: Spol in literarna interpretacija poezije žensk: pesmi Barbare Korun in Kaje Teržan. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 107–120.
Ključne besede: spol, spolna in seksualna identiteta, post/feminizem, literarna interpretacija, pesmi Barbare Korun in Kaje Teržan
Alojzija Zupan Sosič: The Gender and Literary Interpretation of Women’s Poetry: Poems by Barbara Korun and Kaja Teržan. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 107–120.
Literary interpretation in the twenty-first century is closely linked to feminism and postfeminism, which seek to respond to how gender and sexual and gender identity influence the reading and interpretation of literature. In doing so, postfeminism does not advocate a gender-separate theory of reading, but it does acknowledge the fact that gender has an impact on how people interpret texts. It was precisely in postfeminism that a paradigm shift took place, i.e., the intertwining of the hermeneutics of doubt with affective hermeneutics, signifying a departure from the feminist vision of reading as a rebellion that had shackled the reader in a predominantly negative approach. Despite some changes, various theories still find that the male reader and the female reader sometimes differ from each other (e.g., the female reader is bitextual), while the author’s gender may also affect the interpretation. In the literary interpretation of poems by Barbara Korun and Kaja Teržan, I focused various (post)feminist perspectives on the research of gender, the gender and sexual identity of the lyrical subject and its relationship with others, and the innovativeness of the poetic expression in this regard. Whereas the dramatic dialogicity, irony and cogmotive attitude towards the world and words in Korun’s poetics are anchored in distinct views on gender, in the poetry collection Krog by Kaja Teržan the basic mood is circulation, which also implies its fragmentation and intermediateness. Despite the different poetics, the two poets share a number of similarities that are not only related to the role of gender: the courage of confessionality, the spontaneous and yet thoughtful revelation of emotions, special dialogue as openness to self and the world, and prose verse in some longer poems.

Darja Pavlič: Pesnitve sodobnih slovenskih pesnic. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 121–134.

Darja Pavlič: The Poetry of Contemporary Slovenian Women Poets. Jezik in slovstvo. 4/2021. 121–134.
Among the literary genres that characterise Slovenian poetry, long poems have not been prominent, and especially not long poems written by women. In recent years, however, women poets have written a number of works that fit this label, demonstrating their great creative power. In this paper, I first discuss the theory and history of the long poem, devoting particular attention to the diversity of long poems in American poetry, and then analyse recent works by Nina Dragičević, Katja Gorečan and Kristina Hočevar by exploring the poetic processes and themes employed. All of the works under consideration belong to modernist and experimental poetry, and they are all characterised by hybridisation of genres and the dissemination of literature with other media. On a thematic level, they are linked by their treatment of various forms of violence in contemporary society.
