Milena Mileva Blažić: Delovanje Gregorja Kocijana na Pedagoški fakulteti v Ljubljani. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 9-13.

Milena Mileva Blažić: Gregor Kocijan’s Lectureship at the Ljubljana Faculty of Education. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 9-13.
The central part of the bio-bibliography of Gregor Kocijan is represented by his lectureship at his affiliate institution – the Pedagogical Academy, later the Ljubljana Faculty of Education (from 1975 until his retirement on 31 December 1998), where he taught General (and Youth) Literature, while Youth Literature was taught by Marjana Kobe. In the Bologna reform, the subject was divided into two parts: Introduction to Literature, and Youth Literature. Due to the restructuring of the Ljubljana Pedagogical Academy, which once educated teachers of Slovene at all of the levels of eight-year primary school, but later only teachers at class-level primary school, Kocijan was asked to also teach at the Koper unit of the Faculty of Education and the Maribor Faculty of Education, as well as at the Ljubljana Faculty of Arts. His main scientific research interest was Slovene short narrative prose, which he treated in the reading materials for the higher grades of primary school, i.e., from the fifth to the ninth grade of primary school.
Keywords: Gregor Kocijan, Ljubljana Faculty of Education, youth literature, reading materials, short narrative prose

Darka Podmenik: Od raziskovanja slovenskih bralcev do raziskovanja bralne pismenosti. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 19‒29.
Ključne besede: Knjiga in bralci, slovenske bralne navade, roman, elektronski mediji, digitalna pismenost, bralna pismenost

Darka Podmenik: From Studies of Slovene Readers to Contemporary Investigation of Reading Skills. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 19‒29.
Gregor Kocijan initiated, encouraged and carried out research on reading habits in Slovenia in the period between 1973 and 1999. The research project The Book and Its Readers was undertaken four times during this period, each time including new, topical fields of study with a focus on Kocijan’s central interest topic, i.e., the reading of the Slovene novel. The article draws a parallel between the results of his research and those of the latest Slovene surveys of reading habits, which can be compared internationally, particularly with the results of other European research, and which are related to various forms of language competence, including reading skills.

Urška Perenič: Kocijanove empirične obravnave literature in preizkus modela invariantnih kratkoproznih značilnosti. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 31‒37.
Avtorica predstavi glavne empirične obravnave kratke proze Gregorja Kocijana.

Urška Perenič: Kocijan’s Empirical Treatment of Literature and Testing of the Model of Invariant Short Prose Features. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 31‒37.
The author briefly presents the empirical treatment of the short prose by Gregor Kocijan, whereby his main works are listed. In particular, Kocijan’s empirical approach is recognised by the author in his tendency to fully capture data, and in the organisation of the material that, on the one hand, adopts the form of a comprehensive bibliography, and, on the other hand, that of a generally applicable model of short prose features. The latter is tested on the opus of Milica S. Ostrovška.

Jožica Čeh Steger: Metaforika v Jarčevi kratki prozi (1922−1929). Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 51‒62.
V osrednjih motivno-tematskih sklopih so metafore z izhodišči rož, vode, vesoljske svetlobe, glasbe, tehnike, mehanizacije in živali kakor tudi nekatere simbolne podobe živali in plesa. Jarčeva metafora je največkrat v vlogi ponazoritve idej, še zlasti moralnega razkroja človeka in družbe, eksistencialnih stanj in katastrofalnih občutij, a tudi izraz lepote vesolja in narave.
Ključne besede: ekspresionizem, Miran Jarc, kratka proza, narava, tehnika, metafora

Jožica Čeh Steger: Metaphorics in Miran Jarc’s Short Prose (1922−1929). Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 51‒62.
In Jarc’s short prose of the 1920s, scattered in various newspapers and magazines, the dominant elements are those of Expressionism, along with a sediment of Cankarian symbolism. To the thematisation of the post-war moral and social chaos in its catastrophic dimensions, the writer, also influenced by the anti-intellectual movements of the time (he was an admirer of Buddhism and Tagore) added a sharp criticism of reason, technology, and of modern civilization, and presented his idea of the spiritual rebirth of man and society through art and recourse to the mysticism of the universe and nature. The central motif-topic blocks consist of metaphors based on flowers, water, light from space, music, technology, mechanisation and animals, including some of the symbolic images of animals and dance. Jarc’s metaphor often serves as an illustration of ideas, especially regarding the moral degradation of man and society, existential states of mind and catastrophic sentiments, but it is also an expression of the beauty of nature and the universe.
Keywords: Expressionism, Miran Jarc, short prose, nature, technology, metaphor

Blanka Bošnjak: Pekel odtujenosti v izbrani kratki prozi Dušana Čatra. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 63‒71.
Podrobno branje in analiza zbirke kratke proze Dušana Čatra Džehenem (2010) razkriva nekatere njene temeljne značilnosti: z literarnostilnega vidika prevladujoč minimalizem (npr. dialoškost oz. performativnost diskurza, vključevanje vsakdanjega neliterarnega diskurza – mimetičnost govora z vsemi jezikovnimi posebnostmi, kratki stiki v komunikaciji, intertekstualnost, humor, ironija) ter tematizacijo tujstva oz. odtujenosti kot posledico identitete t. i. subjekta v krizi, medkulturnosti, prepletanja ruralnega z urbanim ipd.
Ključne besede: kratka proza, Dušan Čater, minimalizem, mimetičnost, dialoškost diskurza, tematizacija tujstva/odtujenosti

Blanka Bošnjak: The Hell of Alienation in Selected Short Prose of Dušan Čater. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 63‒71.
Advanced reading and analysis of Dušan Čater’s collection of short stories entitled Džehenem (2010) reveals some of its fundamental features: the dominant minimalism from the point of view of literary style (e.g., the dialogic or performative nature of discourse, the integration of everyday non-literary discourse – the mimetic character of speech with all of the linguistic peculiarities, examples of miscommunication, intertextuality, humour, irony) and the thematisation of foreignness or alienation as a result of the identity of the so-called “subject in crisis”, interculturalism, the interweaving of the rural with the urban, etc.
Keywords: short prose, Dušan Čater, minimalism, mimesis, the dialogic nature of discourse, thematisation of foreignness/alienation

Katja Mihurko Poniž: Kratka proza Zofke Kveder. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 73‒84.

Katja Mihurko Poniž: Short Prose by Zofka Kveder. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 73‒84.
Zofka Kveder created an extensive body of short prose that ranks among the best in Slovene literature and can be divided chronologically into two parts. The first (1898–1903) covers the period from Kveder’s first publications to the publication of the first issues of the magazine Home Friend; the second period (1904–1914) was marked by changes in the author’s life requiring a different daily routine in which little time was left for intense artistic creativity. The author’s short prose work is presented according to thematic segments (autobiographical short stories, women’s stories, images of village life, stories illustrating urban life, the narrative theme of emigration, and stories from the Balkan wars) and special stylistic features. Having opted for stylistic pluralism, the writer shapes her narrative using naturalist-realistic stylistic devices, while also feeling an affinity for stylistic procedures typical of New Romanticism.
Keywords: kratka proza, Zofka Kveder, moderna, ženski liki, slovenske pisateljice, avtobiografija, izseljenstvo, balkanske vojne

Alenka Koron: Slovenska kratka vojna proza v periodiki (1919−1929) na ozadju ideje svetovne književnosti. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 85‒97.

Alenka Koron: Slovene Short Prose in Periodicals (1919–1929) on the Backdrop of the Idea of World Literature. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 85‒97.
The paper examines the issue of how world literature on the Great War is “localised” in Slovene short prose published in periodicals between 1919 and 1929. It attempts to investigate how the texts are imbued with a nationalist mindset and how they reflect the cosmopolitan universal humanist ethos. It also deals with the question of the short prose models that are represented in this production – realist, symbolist in the manner of New Romanticism, expressionist, avant-garde or syncretic – and explores how short prose on war is infiltrated, through the realisation of these models, by Modernism.
Keywords: world literature, The Great War, nationalism, the cosmopolitan humanist ethos, Gregor Kocijan, Ivan Pregelj

Alenka Žbogar: Slovenska kratka proza od 1980 do 2000 preštevno. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 99‒112.
V 1229 pripovedih izpod peresa 76 avtorjev (tj. 10 % slovenske kratkoprozne produkcije za odrasle, izšle v osemdesetih in v devetdesetih letih 20. stoletja) smo prešteli število besed. Meritve imajo opisno vrednost, ne pa normativne, saj so obsegovne meje kratke proze dogovorne.

Alenka Žbogar: Slovene Short Prose from 1980 to 2000 – A Quantitative Perspective. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 99‒112.
The article examines the quantity and dynamics of Slovene short prose published from 1980 to 2000,author’s prose type labels in titles and subtitles of prose collections, and size-of-the-text parameters (number of words) in the individual stories included in the selected compilations. The number of words was counted in 1,229 stories penned by 76 authors (i.e., 10% of Slovene short prose production for adults, published in the 1980s and 1990s). The statistical results have a descriptive rather than normative value, considering that size limits of short prose are, in fact, a matter of agreement.

Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 113‒120.
V okviru pouka nemške in slovenske književnosti v gimnazijah druge polovice 19. in zgodnjega 20. stoletja je kratka proza obsegala zanemarljiv, statistično komaj opazen del, ki so ga prav zato dosedanji redki raziskovalci šolskega literarnega kanona puščali praviloma ob strani. Pričujoči prispevek osvetljuje ta prezrti segment in raziskuje vzroke za slabo zastopanost kratke proze v učnih načrtih in zavesti tedanjih učiteljev.

Irena Samide: “Verse Has Always Been the Language of Poetry and Prose the Language of Reality”: German Short Prose in Slovene Grammar Schools in the Period between 1848 and 1918. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 113‒120.
In the context of teaching German and Slovene literature in upper secondary (grammar) schools (gimnazije) in the second half of the 19th and early 20th century, short fiction was represented by a negligible, statistically barely noticeable part, which for this very reason has been largely neglected by the few researchers of the school literary canon (Korte 2011, Samide 2012). The paper sheds light on this overlooked segment and explores the reasons for the under-representation of short prose in the curricula and for the lack of awareness on the part of the teachers of the time. The focus is on teaching German, which, after the upper secondary school reform in 1848, acquired a constitutive role in upper secondary school education. The findings are based on an analysis of 202 annual reports issued between 1849 and 1918 by three selected classical grammar schools (klasične gimnazije) in the Slovene territory: the Ljubljana Grammar School, the Maribor Grammar School and the Klagenfurt Grammar School.
Keywords: school literary canon, teaching German literature, grammar schools (gimnazije) in the Slovene territory, 19th century, German short prose

Janez Vrečko: Aristotelov posnetek kot posnetek v razliki. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 121‒128.

Janez Vrečko: Aristotle’s Mimesis as Mimesis of Difference. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 121‒128.
In his 2000-year history, Western man has, in addition to Plato’s iconoclasm and abstraction, discovered mimesis, which transcends the mechanical relationship of mere doubling between that which is represented and the representation itself. According to Aristotle, the imitated object evokes pleasure if its imitation is as faithful as possible, but it can only be such if it is not the same as the real object that it imitates.

Nadežda Starikova: Problem modernizma v literaturah SFRJ. Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 129‒135.
V nekaterih primerih so šli avtorji v radikalen prelom z realistično tradicijo. Ena izmed posebnosti jugoslovanskih literatur je obilje besedil, ki združujejo realistične in modernistične komponente.
Ključne besede: modernizem, jugoslovanske literature, umetniški eksperiment, tok zavesti

Nadežda Starikova: The Problem of Modernism in the Literatures of Ex-Yugoslav Republics (SFRJ). Jezik in slovstvo. 1–2/2013. 129‒135.
In the Yugoslav literatures, modernism as a type of creativity established itself in the first half of 1950, and was relevant for about twenty years as a means of artistic dissidence in the struggle against the dominant ideology. In their philosophy and aesthetics, its representatives drew on the literary movement of the same name in the literatures of Western Europe and America in the first third of the 20th century. Modernist tendencies were generally quite varied: psychoanalytic, rational constructivist, experimental hermetic. In some cases, the authors opted for a radical break with the realist tradition. One of the features of the Yugoslav literatures was an abundance of texts that combined realist and modernist components.
