Zoran Božič: Dejavniki literarne kanonizacije v srednješolskih berilih – na primeru Prešerna. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2011. 3–26.

Zoran Božič: Factors of Literary Canonisation in High School Reading Materials – The Case of Prešeren. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2011. 3–26.
In the 19th century, Prešeren, undisputedly the leading name of the Slovene literary canon, first became established as a classical poet. Having conquered the Slovene poetry Parnassus, he increasingly became a Slovene national myth, especially after World War II. He was assigned a different status in high school reading materials, where he was often the first author, but his position within the canon continued to change due to various factors: apart from on the test of time, the selection of authors and their fiction texts depended on the personalities of the compilers of reading materials, on the influence exerted by literary history, criticism and didactics, as well as on the changes of the national territory and socio-political and socio-economical changes.

Petra Jordan: Fanovska literatura kot prostor preizkušanja alternativnih življenjskih praks. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2011. 27–38.

Petra Jordan: Fan Literature as a Space for Testing Alternative Lifestyle Practices. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2011. 27–38.
The vast body of stories – different in terms of genre, type and form – about the most famous literary characters that are written and published by their faithful fan readers is in many ways a special phenomenon. It has been growing steadily all over the world, and is mostly brought to the attention of the public with regard to its undefined legal status. However, it remains largely unknown in the Slovene community. Its specific features at the production, distribution and reception levels of the literary system derive from its specially motivated origin as a key feature of fan literature, distinguishing it from standard literary production. These features include amateurism, non-profit production, transience, collective work, a culture of collaboration (sharing) and new paradigms of the author-reader relationship, the selection mechanism and authority.

Barbara Jarh Ciglar: Lezbična ljubezen v sodobnem slovenskem romanu. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2011. 39–56.

Barbara Jarh Ciglar: Lesbian Love in the Contemporary Slovene Novel. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2011. 39–56.
The socio-political changes of recent years have not circumvented the issue of sexual minorities, nor that of the Slovene novel telling the story of our time. The link between the actual state of things in society and what happens in the novel is an interesting segment of research endeavours. Therefore, in the introductory part, a historical overview is given of the social position of lesbians and selected theoretical premises are provided, which contributes towards a more objective interpretation of the treated novels. Slovene literature with lesbian subject matter first appears at the end of the 19th century. The first novel of this genre is Fata morgana (1898) by Marica Nadlišek Bartol, but it is only in the second half of the 20th century that lesbian literature is discussed in greater depth. At that point, it becomes institutionalised, publishers specialising in lesbian literature start to appear, and the question of the definition of lesbian writing is first raised for public debate. The first Slovene novel with a lesbian topic, My Name is Damian, was published in 2001, and the first Slovene lesbian novel, The Third World, was published six years later. Both take the reader to the world of being different, as well as providing a subtle insight into the inner world of central literary characters, human relations and social climate.

Martina Potisk: Medbesedilno sklicevanje v nekaterih romanih Draga Jančarja. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2011. 57–71.

Martina Potisk: Intertextual Reference in some of Drago Jančar’s Novels. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2011. 57–71.
The article treats intertextual links in selected novels by Drago Jančar, leading from a presentation of the positioning of the novel in the period of Slovene postmodern literature to a description of the writer’s selected novels. These are seen as a starting point for seeking different methods of intertextual reference, within which certain intertextual figures of speech and genres that, due to their semantic and nominal similarities, are easily mistaken for one another are more precisely defined: summary and paraphrase, allusion and narrative allusion are illustrated by examples from Jančar’s novels The Galley Slave (1978), Northern Lights (1984) and Headnoise (1998). As a special intertextual genre, a variation of the novel The Builder (2006) is presented, distinct for its use of the mythical figure and the archetypal situation, as well as for character borrowing and many citation similarities obtaining between this novel and Jančar’s drama Daedalus (1988).

Maja Šebjanič: Podoba učitelja v slovenski prozi 1855–1914. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2011. 73–92.

Maja Šebjanič: The Image of the Teacher in Slovene Prose 1855–1914. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2011. 73–92.
The image of the teacher was, on the one hand, influenced by legal regulations prescribing the teacher’s qualities, and, on the other, by the personal experiences of individuals, writers among them. Slovene prose writers who chose the teacher as their literary hero shaped the literary image of the teacher. In the prose written between 1855 and 1914, two images of a male teacher and one image of a female teacher were created.

Katarina Rigler Šilc: Razumevanje frazemov pri učenju in poučevanju slovenščine kot drugega/tujega jezika. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2011. 93–108.

Katarina Rigler Šilc: Comprehension of Phraseological Units in Learning and Teaching Slovene as a Second/Foreign Language. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2011. 93–108.
In the article, the author investigates how Slovene phraseological units are comprehended by those who study Slovene as a second or foreign language at the Centre for Slovene as a Second/Foreign Language, Ljubljana Faculty of Arts, as well as examining what affects the degree of comprehension. The first part presents how phraseological units are comprehended and highlights the area of psycholinguistics, while in the continuation the focus is on the comprehension of phraseological units in context (as compared to the degree of comprehension when in dictionary form). In the process, the author examines the extent to which phraseology comprehension is influenced by gender, age, profession and the first language/mother tongue, as well as by knowledge of other foreign languages.

Drago Unuk: Izpustnost in elipsa. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2011. 109–118.

Drago Unuk: Omission and Ellipsis. Jezik in slovstvo. 5–6/2011. 109–118.
The article presents the theoretical relationship between the understanding of omission and ellipsis. Of all of the types of elliptical constructions, the most frequently analysed are gapping and verbal ellipsis. It would seem that ellipsis and other procedures involving omission require a certain similarity or parallelism obtaining between the reduced member and an antecedent in the discourse, which also grants the integration of the ellipsis into the structure of the discourse. Defining topicality with a referent and selecting the form of the referent is, on the one hand, determined as an information structure and, on the other, as a discourse structure; both are manifest as information organising principles – as a visible and structured expression of order. Thus there is a need to examine the phenomenon of omission, and within this the place of ellipsis.
